Welcome to Cafe Scientifique: A Discussion on Ovarian Cancer Prevention!

Join us for an engaging and informative evening at our latest Café Scientifique event as we explore ovarian cancer prevention, risk, and emerging strategies aimed at reducing disease burden. This event brings together leading experts in cancer prevention and genetics to help demystify ovarian cancer and empower attendees with evidence-based knowledge.

The evening will open with remarks from Dr. Trevor Dummer, Dr. Dianne Miller, and Andrea Seale, followed by a featured talk from Dr. Gillian Hanley on opportunistic salpingectomy, a preventive surgical approach that is transforming how ovarian cancer risk is addressed during routine gynecologic procedures. The scientific evidence behind this strategy, why it matters, and how it is being implemented in clinical practice will be explored and discussed. The program will also include a focused discussion led by Dr. Lesa Dawson on hereditary ovarian cancer risk. This segment will explore what inherited risk means for individuals and families, how genetic information is used in prevention and care, and when genetic counselling and testing may be helpful.

This Café Scientifique event is open to everyone, including patients, families, healthcare providers, researchers, and members of the public who are interested in learning more about ovarian cancer prevention. We invite you to bring your questions and join a thoughtful, accessible discussion focused on prevention, awareness, and informed decision-making.

Co-hosted by the UBC Cancer Prevention Research Cluster, the Gynecologic Cancer Initiative, and the Canadian Cancer Society, this event aims to bridge research, clinical practice, and community understanding. Join us for an evening of learning, conversation, and connection.
