Program Overview

The Anti-Racist Teaching and Learning (A-RTL) team at CTLT is excited to offer another installment of “Building Capacity” a networking, wellness, and educational space offered to the IBPOC identifying teaching and learning community Celebrate Learning Week. This installment of Building Capacity is focused on sharing and storytelling around “little transformations” regarding anti-racist strategizing, teaching and learning, and/or cultural change across departments, faculties and institutions. Recognizing the feeling of waning institutional investments in anti-racist work and the current cultural climate that make large scale change feel impossible, we wish to offer a space of dialogue rooted in the concept of “micro-transformation”. Micro transformations are small scale, everyday actions and opportunities that build towards the larger scale change we wish to see, interpersonally and systemically. In sharing “micro-methods” we hope this light facilitation and community driven space will leave participants with an emerging toolbox of strategies to maintain hope and momentum in engaging in anti-racist work.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore strategies to stimulate cultural and systemic change across departments, faculties, and/or institutions for IBPOC students, staff and faculty
  2. Connect and build a network with new and returning IBPOC faculty, lecturers, graduate students, and staff who are interested in anti-racist pedagogies and practices
  3. Meet the A-RTL team at CTLT, and become familiar with resources, curated for the IBPOC teaching and learning community

In-person networking and connection event that also provide discussion-based learning opportunities. Half the session will be dedicated to creating a space for attendees to informally network, mingle and connect. The other half will be light facilitated where session facilitators will share teaching, learning, and wellness resources curated for IBPOC educators at UBC, related to the theme of our session. Light refreshments will be provided!
