About the Event

February’s event is an acknowledgement celebration of Black History Month. Esteemed UBC professor Dr. Handel Wright will be our guest speaker for this event. Dr. Wright is a long-time tenured Professor in the faculty of Education and a strong supporter of the BMI. Dr Wright has recently co-chaired the UBC Anti-Racism taskforce and was instrumental in developing wide ranging university recommendations/ policies in part supporting IBPOC students. He will share the task force recommendations and how BMI can help ensure these recommendations get implemented.

Food and drinks will be provided.

About the Black Male Initiative

Of the Canadian provinces, British Columbia has the lowest representation of the Black population in Canada, and it is often difficult for Black male students in particular to access the support they need.

The Black Male Initiative is designed to support UBC male students who self-identify as Black. It provides a confidential space on campus for members to connect to other Black male students, where they can share their lived experiences with one another and receive both peer and mentor support.

The program strives to support all Black male students during their time at UBC with the following:

  • Regular gatherings for authentic group conversations
  • Social events/ speakers
  • Mentorship opportunities
  • Networking/Community building
  • Safe space for Black male students only
