From English Major to CFO – A non-Linear Career Path With a Values-Based Approach

I’m a nature lover, athlete, mother, writer, photographer, ski instructor, chief financial officer, and secretary-treasurer.

While I grew up saying I was going to be a novelist, real-life intervened and this Grade 10 math dropout eventually ended up as CFO of an $85m public sector organization. My business career post-articling began in feature films, which was fun and lucrative, but all about money. Unhappy in an industry that diverged from my personal values, after a number of years I left to pursue work I hoped could make a positive contribution to my community. I joined West Vancouver Schools in 2008 and I’ve been here ever since, striving to make things better for kids.

My intention is to lead with empathy and integrity, and I judge my staff and colleagues on their contributions rather than their compliance. I look for beauty in the small things, and gratitude is my grounding principle. Mountains make my heart sing. In this Alumni Office Hour, I will speak about my values-based approach to my non-linear career path
