5 Don’t-Miss Events at UBC This Year

January has arrived and so has a new year. These upcoming UBC events are action-packed and full of laughs and memories. Mark them on your calendar and start ticking them off your bucket list.

Winter Classic (January 17)

This memorable UBC hockey game is the best way to start the new year. Bring a group of friends and join the rest of UBC in watching the UBC Men’s Hockey team take on Manitoba. This isn’t just any hockey game as there will also be food, live music and activities to enjoy. You definitely don’t want to be sitting on the sidelines.

Storm The Wall (March 21 – 24)

The biggest intramural event in North America, Storm the Wall combines the three essential elements of a triathlon – swimming, running and biking – with a special twist in the form of a 12-foot wall. It’s a must-try event. Choose to conquer the storm in a team of five or take it on solo in a shot at becoming a UBC Iron Legend.

Homecoming (September)

Break out the blue, get out your gold and join others in this back-to-school celebration of UBC pride. March to Thunderbird Stadium in the Homecoming Trek with hundreds of fellow T-Birds, collecting students at residences across campus. Then enjoy pre-game fun at the homecoming street party in the stadium parking lot, which includes games, food trucks and live music, before cheering on the Thunderbirds with the rest of UBC.

Day of the Longboat (September)

Join one of UBC’s biggest fall events and the largest voyageur canoe race in the world, with over 3,000 people paddling in the waters off Jericho Beach. It isn’t every day you get the chance to travel in a canoe with your best friends, so whether you’re a novice or an expert, you are sure to have fun.

Polar Bear Swim (Late November/Early December)

Whether it’s your first year or you’re checking this off your graduation bucket list, this is a UBC tradition and a must-do. Take a dip into the ocean with other UBC students to celebrate the end of first-term classes. If diving into cold water isn’t your thing, feel free to cheer on your friends and watch the brave ones instead.
