The last month of Summer at UBC is brimming with educational and community events to prepare you for September, as we see several lecture series, live music events, an employment fair, and more!
August 1: UBC Pride
Pride week is kicking off at UBC on August 1 in front of the nest! Celebrate diversity, inclusion, and love of all kinds with Public Disco, a beer garden, drag and dress up, food trucks, mural painting, and more.
August 5: Albatross are Way Cool because…
Make your way to the Beaty Biodiversity museum on August 5 to learn about our favorite bird, the albatross, at this lecture led by Ildiko Szabo. With albatross specimens of all sizes and a 4D experience, you’re sure to walk away with a newfound appreciation for these ocean explorers.
August 8: Work on Campus Fair
Itching to make some pocket money during your studies? With over 350 jobs available, the Work on Campus Fair is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet on-campus employers and apply for part-time jobs that start in September. Employers include the UBC Bookstore, UBC Athletics and Recreation, Virtuous Pie, CiTR 101.9FM, and many more!
August 11: Summer in the Square—Feona Lim
Warm weather, patios, beers, and live music make for a wonderful summer day. Wesbrook Village’s Summer in the Square series features local artists twice a week in the Norman Mackenzie Square—today’s artist is Feona Lim, a contemporary folk songwriter from Alberta whose inspiration comes from her French Canadian/Haudenosaunee mother and her Chinese/kadazan dusun father.
Ending August 12: Radial Change: Beginning with the Seventies
This ongoing project at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery investigates the 1970s— an era in which social movements of all kinds began to coalesce into models of self-organization. This collaborative exhibit highlights feminism, environmentalism, LGBTQ rights, healthcare accessibility, and more!
August 15: Positive Space Workshop
Learn how to improve and positively impact your working, learn, or living climate for sexual and gender diversity at this Positive Space foundational workshop, where you will be covering current language, issues, resources and best practices in an interactive learning environment. No matter where you work, learn, or live, you will gain relevant knowledge and skills to use.
August 15: Eitetsu Hayashi: Japanese Taiko Drum Concert Tour
Take advantage of this rare chance to experience the forefront of taiko drumming in Japan—in celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Canada-Japan Diplomatic relations, the Japan Foundation brings Eitetsu Hayashi, Japan’s premier solo taiko drummer, across Canada. Hayashi is joined by his touring ensemble, EITETSU FU-UN no KAI, comprised of top young drummers in Japan.
August 16: Amphitheatre Summer Series: Micki-Lee’s Trio
See some of the nation’s most beloved fiddle tunes at the next installment of the Amphitheatre Summer Series, as Micki-Lee’s Trio takes you across generations from old-time fiddle to Celtic, bluegrass, swing, gypsy jazz, folk, and country. Listen while chowing down on a self-packed picnic, or purchased at the cash bar with snacks and beverages!
August 23: Community Kitchen at UBC Farm
The UBC Farm is hosting a monthly community kitchen, with the next session on August 23 at 5:30pm! Come together with your community to share cooking skills, meet new people, and enjoy a vegetarian (with vegan options) meal together. Students, faculty, staff, and neighbors all welcome.
August 30: Seed Saving at UBC Farm
Learn to save your seeds with the UBC Farm, and eventually you may be able to create your own heirloom varieties for your favourite plants! This workshop will cover the basics of plant reproduction, which plants to save, seed-saving vocabulary, how to use tools, and seasonal varieties of plants for seed-saving.
