While the end of the exam period is drawing near, there are no shortage of events to check out this month. Learn about the political battle for BC, attend the grand opening of the UBC Indian Residential School History & Dialogue Centre, and more.
1. April 3: The Chan Turns 20
As a sign of the deep gratitude we feel towards the Chan family who made this facility possible, on April 3 UBC Opera celebrates twenty years at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The UBC Opera Ensemble will present an evening of excerpts featuring many of the operas that we have presented on this stage. Come and join the celebration!
2. April 5: A Matter of Confidence: The Inside Story of the Political Battle for BC
Authors Richard Zussman and Robert Shaw join us to discuss their new book, A Matter of Confidence: The Inside Story of the Political Battle for BC. Moderated by Professor Gerald Baier, Political Science.
3. April 6: The 11th Annual AMS Block Party
The AMS Block Party celebrates its 11th anniversary – this is the one you surely don’t want to miss! This is an event by UBC students, for UBC students and the campus community. It is intended as a safe and festive event that will bring students and friends together in a celebration of a year completed, and a summer soon to start.
4. April 9: UBC Indian Residential School History & Dialogue Centre
Professor Santa J. Ono, President and Vice-Chancellor invites you to attend a ceremony to witness the official opening of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre and a Statement of Apology for UBC’s involvement in the system that supported the operation of the Indian Residential Schools.
5. April 12: Film Screening – Heart of a Dog
Initially approached to create a film about her “philosophy of life”, visionary multimedia artist Laurie Anderson tells a dreamlike tale of loss and love, primarily starring her beloved rat terrier, Lolabelle. This documentary muses about trauma and grief, relationships with loved ones, and the fragility of life—all with a poetic, rather sublime intonation. Super 8 footage as well as original art and animation are interspersed throughout Anderson’s profound yet relatable series of thoughts.
6. April 18: Bang! Festival Concert
The UBC Laptop Orchestra is an ensemble in which students code their own computer instruments or audio/video processes. Those systems are then controlled through gesture tracking of traditional instruments, dance, piano or string performance, or by using webcams, Kinects, Wiis, accelerometers, game controls, custom circuits, Arduinos, iPhones, iPads, or other tablets. Enjoy a presentation of their work at this concert.
7. April 18: Movie – Unsettling Environmental Review
Filmed on Coast Salish Territory, “Unsettling Environmental Review” is a 37 minute film of highlights from the 4-day event that considers how Aboriginal and religious ceremony can help make processes physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually safer and more welcoming to all comers.
8. April 19: UBC Connects – The Wisdom of Reconciliation: A roadmap for multiculturalism
In this important talk, the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) mother, activist, Olympian, and entrepreneur makes the case for fostering a collective culture of listening and dialogue; for extending empathy to those with different outlooks and not shying away from debate; and for applying solutions-based thinking rooted in shared aspirations.
9. April 19: MEDtalks – Emergency: Drug Use and Addiction in the 21st Century
In April 2016, BC declared a public health emergency in response to the rapid rise of fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses in the province. Since then, the problem has only worsened, with the number of overdose deaths in 2017 exceeding 2016’s totals by a significant margin. Hear from four top UBC researchers and clinicians from UBC Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Arts and Pharmaceutical Sciences as they present their research in a series of short MEDtalks.
10. April 19: 2018 EDGE Film Festival
The UBC School of Nursing is pleased to present their second annual film festival. This special evening features short films made in collaboration with nursing researchers and community partners that explore the socio-cultural contexts of health as points of transformation. Tickets include a complimentary beverage and catered reception.
