Top 10 UBC Events to Attend in March

March is here, which means springtime, cherry blossoms, and the last full month of classes for many students. There are some great events going on this month, including a TEDx conference, academic talks, and a production of “The Crucible” by UBC Theatre and Film.


1. Mar 1: Indigenous Dance Artist Panel

Visit MOA for an in-depth panel discussion presented by the Dancers of Damelahamid in conjunction with the 2018 Coastal First Nations Dance Festival, which will explore and discuss the state of Indigenous dance today

2. Mar 3: TEDxUBC

Every student has a story. After a 1 year hiatus, TEDx is back at UBC for another conference featuring some amazing student stories. All talks will be available online soon after the conference concludes.

3. Mar 8: UBC Connects – Jeremy Rifkin

Can we prevent the next mass extinction of life on Earth? In this first instalment of the UBC Connects series presented by Professor Santa J. Ono, American economic and social theorist Jeremy Rifkin presents a new vision of a Smart Third Industrial Revolution. Bookmark the UBC Connects page to view the live webcast on the event day.

4. Mar 10: UBC Triathlon Duathlon

Kick off your 2018 race season with BC’s longest running triathlon. With a wide variety of distances and race formats, there is something for everyone. The event runs through UBC’s campus with the swim taking place in the competition tank at the UBC Aquatic Centre.

5. Mar 10 – 11: Learning Analytics Hackathon 3.0

Want to get hands-on experience exploring and analyzing learning data? Join the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology for the 3rd annual Learning Analytics Hackathon. At this two-day hackathon, you’ll form teams to explore an open data set, propose questions and solutions, and share what you’ve discovered with a brief presentation at the end of the weekend. No experience necessary.

6. UBC Reads Sustainability with Elizabeth May

In Who We Are: Reflections on my life and on Canada, Elizabeth draws from her life experience, growing up in a politically active family in the US, to moving to a small village on Cape Breton Island. Forty five years after leaving the US as a teenager, she will reflect on the decline of US society, the rise of ignorance and the challenge for Canada. The Paris Agreement and the impact of Trump will be explored with a surprisingly hopeful conclusion.

7. Mar 14: Lead, Succeed, and Inspire: An Evening with Changemakers

In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8th, and the International Day for the Elimination of Racism on March 21st, join the UBC Equity and Inclusion Office for an evening of inspirational engagement. Engage in dialogue and exchange ideas with UBC alumni, faculty, and community members that are working to make our communities, and the world, a better place for all.

8. Mar 15 – 31: The Crucible

The Crucible is a timeless parable of morality, a scorching indictment of intolerance, and a central work in the canon of American drama. In a tight-knit Puritan town, a group of girls are discovered dancing in the woods and then immediately fall ill causing panic to percolate. Buried secrets are brought to light, and scapegoating leads to treachery and betrayal.

9. Mar 19: Writing the Future

Listen to a reading from three highly acclaimed authors, followed by a Q&A moderated by new Chair of the UBC Creative Writing Program, and acclaimed author, Alix Ohlin.

10. Mar 25 – 28: Storm the Wall

Storm the Wall is a classic UBC event, full of spirit, great athletic ability, and lots of fun. Anyone who has every participated knows how much of a special experience it is to be a part of, as well as being a thrilling spectator event.
