Holidays 2017: What’s Happening at UBC?

There are a lot of UBC events this holiday season to get you in a festive spirit. Here are some of the highlights.


Holiday Flea Market at Seedlings

Get started on your holiday shopping while supporting your local vendors! Sprouts is hosting their first ever Holiday Flea Market. On sale will be vegan baked goods and snacks, handmade cards, used books, and much more. Be sure to catch the free banana sundae bar at 5:30 pm.

Holiday Craft Night

UBC Botany Enthusiast Club and UBC PRINT Club are teaming up to host a plant-related craft night. It will be a great way to create a trendy handmade gift for someone this holiday season or to make some fun holiday decorations. They’ll have all the supplies ready for you to craft together pinecone elves, owls, and some hanging jellyfish airplants.

Cost: $3 – $8 (Depends on the craft)

 

UBC Botanical Garden Wreath Sale 2017

Head out to the UBC Botanical Garden for some crisp December air and to check their assortment of unique handmade wreaths that use evergreens, colourful berries, and exotic foliage collected within the gardens. Be sure to head down early to get your pick as the supply of wreaths is limited.

Cocktails and Carols

Let loose at this Holiday Central event! Complimentary appetizers and seasonal drink specials will be available from Loafe Café, carolers will be singing holiday classics, and a photo booth will be on-site to provide take home souvenirs of the evening. Just be sure to RSVP early and get ready for a fun night to ring in the holidays.

UBC Basketball Festive Friday

Put on your best holiday gear and come out to celebrate the last day of classes by cheering on your UBC Thunderbirds basketball teams as they take on the Regina Cougars. There will be holiday music, drinks, and great chances to win some prizes. Keep an eye on @ubctbirds on Instagram and the UBC Thunderbirds on Facebook for some amazing giveaways leading up to Festive Friday!

Holiday Mashup

Here’s your chance to dress up a little for a night of music, food, and good company. UBC Music Initiative, City Piano Program, and Shine On Music are hosting their 2nd annual Holiday Mashup to ring in the last day of classes. A line-up of talented musicians from several AMS clubs, plus President Ono, is scheduled to perform. The ticket will include dinner, dessert, and drinks and a chance to show your chops at the open-mic.

Wesbrook Holiday Craft Fair

Pick up the perfect gift at this artisanal holiday marketplace! There will be over 40 vendors, crafters, and artists selling an array of artwork, accessories, textiles, ceramics, and other unique goods. Some of your favourite neighbourhood stores will have a booth set up, so drop by to say hi. There will be other holiday activities set up so everyone will have something to enjoy!

Christmas Tree Competition

As a part of the Holiday Central series, drop by the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre to have your say in which beautifully decorated tree is your favourite! You’re encouraged to get in the spirit of giving by dropping off a monetary gift, personal hygiene item, or non-perishable food donation for the UBC food bank.

Christmas at the Chan

Listen to four Trinity Western University choirs accompanied by a professional orchestra for a musical celebration of the season. Award-winning conductor Dr. Joel Tranquilla, Director of Choral Activities at TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture will bring you an enchanting afternoon of musical performances to usher in the spirit and meaning of Christmas. Highlights include featured solo performances and a repertoire of traditional carols for you to sing along to.

Christmas Tree Sale 2017

Bring your family and friends out to the UBC Farm for a unique Christmas tree experience! There will be potted trees along with trees that you can cut for yourself on sale. Revenues will be going to support the Forestry Undergraduate Society, UBC Farm, and Forests Without Borders, an international charity that benefits communities, forests and the environment. As a sustainable student-run business, the trees will be sold on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis, so be sure to head out early!
