November is here and UBC has a variety of events open for all. You won’t want to miss out on the events in this top 10 list. Also, just a friendly reminder to turn your clocks back an hour for Daylight Savings Time on November 5.
1. November 2 – 5: UBC Opera – Orfeo ed Euridice
Based on a mythological subject, this opera tells the tale of the legendary poet and musician, Orfeo. It is a three-act opera in Italian with English subtitles on screen exploring the power of love and music in our lives. Enjoy the musical accompaniment by members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
2. November 7: The Shadow World of the Global Arms Trade
In this open lecture, Andrew Feinstein, executive director of the NGO, Corruption Watch, and author of a critically-acclaimed book will give an insight into the shadow world of the global trade in weapons—its systemic corruption, highly technical nature, and the pervasive secrecy in which deals are concluded.
3. November 9 – 25: UBC Theatre and Film: Wives and Daughters
Based on Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1860’s novel and adapted by UBC Theatre and Film Professor Jacqueline Firkins, Wives and Daughters, tells the story of seventeen-year-old Molly, the daughter of a country doctor, whose life gets turned upside down when an overbearing stepmother and an impetuous stepsister move in. A feminist ahead of her time, Gaskell tackles the meaning of love in all its forms and the limitations society places on women as they pursue their desires.

4. November 11: Remembrance Day Ceremony
This year, 2017 will mark 66 years that The University of British Columbia has hosted a Remembrance Day ceremony. This special ceremony is an opportunity for faculty, staff, students and members of the on and off-campus community to honour and remember all those who served in times of war, military conflict and peace. The program will include short readings, remarks from special guests and musical performances by the UBC Opera Ensemble. Everyone is welcome to attend.
5. November 16: Lace Up for Kids
UBC Recreation and the Rare Disease Foundation, in support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, wants to help transform the world of rare disease care. Join by fundraising on a team, or on your own. Everyone is welcome to join on the day-of for a silent auction, skating, food and much more at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre!
6. November 19: MOA -The Fabric of Our Land: Salish Weaving – Opening
Salish weavers selected ten blankets from the 1800s to be part of this unique exhibition. Returning from Finland, Scotland, England, and the eastern United States, this is the first time that these blankets have been seen in Vancouver. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the unique design of Salish blankets up close and to learn the rich history and significance of weaving in this region.
7. November 22 – November 24: Fall Graduation 2017
The Fall Graduation 2017 Vancouver Campus ceremonies will take place at The Chan Centre for Performing Arts. Afterwards, a graduation reception will be held at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre for students and guests. Celebrate with your family, friends and loved ones with complimentary warm beverages, cake, portrait photography, gown drop and more!
8. November 23: Water Wars
UBC Recreation presents Water Wars! Sign up for a night of fun with friends at the UBC Aquatic Centre. Teams compete in heats of challenges, with the top team going forward to a playoff. Create a team of your own, head to a Free Agent meeting to find a team, or sign up to be a volunteer. There are a lot of ways to enjoy this evening at the pool!
9. November 28 – 29: UBC Reads Sustainability with Duncan McCue
Join for lunch or evening appetizers with award-winning journalist, Duncan McCue, for a moderated conversation and an intimate reading of his book, The Shoe Boy. Come hear about the author’s motivation for sharing this story, a story of discovering his indigenous identity as a teenager, and his perspective on how the connection to land and cultural identity are related to the world’s sustainability.
10. November 29: Building a Better Canada
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Order of Canada, UBC invites you to an intimate evening with some of BC’s most esteemed citizens. Join us for a performance by world-renowned pianist, Robert Silverman, and talks by fellow Order of Canada recipients: Trevor Linden, Sophie Pierre, Wade Davis, David Suzuki and Shelagh Rogers. In conversation with CBC Radio’s Duncan McCue, our speakers will share their unique vision for what it will take to build a better Canada over the next 50 years.
