Voice to Voice Art Song Project – Thursday April 2nd
Vancouver’s Voice to Voice Project invites you to two evenings of Art Song newly created by Downtown Eastside (DTES) writers and UBC School of Music composers. Over the past year, Thursdays Writing Collective (thursdayswritingcollective.ca) and Instruments of Change (instrumentsofchange.org) have worked with the UBC School of Music (music.ubc.ca) on a unique project based on an overall theme of ‘transformation’ with the results – 11 original Art Songs – to be premiered by UBC singers and pianists this spring.

Nehiyo-paskwa-itsimowin Pow-wow Celebration 2015 – Saturday April 4th
The First Nations Studies Student Association (FNSSA) and the Indigenous Students’ Association (InSA) are hosting UBC’s first annual pow-wow, a celebration of life through song and dance that originates from the Plains People, east of the Rocky Mountains. Everyone is welcome to enjoy dancing and singing, food and artisan vendors.

This event is part of the Year of Research in Education. What can research do to promote the wellbeing of children and youth in British Columbia? Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, Representative for Children and Youth, will share her uniquely well-informed perspective on the needs of BC’s vulnerable children and youth. She will discuss issues of children’s rights and welfare, as well as their developmental, psychological, medical and service needs.

Lila Downs – Sunday April 26th
A social activist, world traveller and singer of astonishing power and grace, Mexican/American artist Lila Downs melds traditional Mexican music with blues, jazz and rock into a modern, living and utterly unique sound. She has earned numerous accolades in the last decade including a 2012 GRAMMY Award, two Latin GRAMMY Awards and performances at the Oscars and the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Obama.
